How-to guides

Short, practical instructions for getting a specific job done. Each guide assumes you already know the basics — if you are new, start with the tutorial.

1. Attach a note to a passage on a web page

  1. Highlight the text you want the note to refer to, or place the cursor where the note should go.
  2. Right-click (on a touch screen: press and hold) and choose YellowNotes in the context menu.
  3. Select the type of note — see note types — write the note and save it.

Requires the browser extension. Details: How to create yellow notes.

2. Write a note without the browser extension

  1. Open New note (logged in) or New note (not logged in).
  2. Enter the address of the web page the note is about, write the note and save it.

3. Hide notes on a page

Move the slider in the extension's control panel (upper-left corner of the page) to the left position. No notes are shown on that page, and the setting is remembered for the page. See control panel settings for the other positions.

4. Create a topic

  1. Open My topics and choose + Create a new topic.
  2. Give it a name and a description that tells subscribers what it covers.
  3. Add notes to it from each note's menu bar.

5. Change who can see and use a topic

  1. Open the topic from My topics.
  2. Under Settings, switch the options on or off. Click an option's name to see what it does.

All options are listed in Reference: topic settings.

6. Subscribe to someone else's topic

  1. Open My subscriptions and choose + Add a subscription.
  2. Pick a topic from the list. Some topics enrol you straight away; others wait for the owner's approval.

Not sure which topic to choose? Ask for advice on which topics.

7. Manage the subscribers of your topic

Open Subscribers. From the table you can approve pending requests, suspend or block subscribers, and adjust their AI chat quotas. To handle the subscribers of a single topic, open the topic and choose Manage subscribers.

8. Ask AI about a topic

  1. Open AI chat.
  2. Select up to two topics you own or subscribe to.
  3. Type your question and press Send. Use Reset chat to start over.

9. Export or restore your data

Your data can be exported to a digitally signed JSON file, and the same file can be imported again to restore your account. See Your data for what is included, and Data portability for the policy behind it.
