Help page for the YellowNotes AI chat bot

YellowNotes is a way to curate the internet. To select useful pieces that can be collected to a topic. The topics can then be used as a basis for an AI (LLM).

Selection what is correct and what is important, is an act of human judgment. An AI chat tool based on this selection is therefore an AI that incoporates human judgement. One where you get to chose which person whose judgment is to be used.

What is this?

YellowNotes provides RAG-powered AI chat grounded in user-curated Topics. Users select up to two Topics as a knowledge base; the AI retrieves relevant notes via vector similarity search and composes answers at temperature 0.2. Eight LLM providers are supported — OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, Ollama (local), Cohere, Mistral, DeepSeek, and VoyageAI (embeddings only) — each configurable per topic alongside custom system prompts and cost-distribution settings (user-pays vs. owner-pays). Token counts, USD costs, model name, and temperature are logged per API call. The platform explicitly positions human editorial judgment as the superior foundation for grounded, hallucination-reduced AI responses.

AI chat

A Topic is a named collection of YellowNotes created and owned by a registered user. Notes are published to a Topic rather than being purely personal. Other users can subscribe to a Topic, after which they automatically see all its notes on the relevant web pages. The owner controls who subscribes and can manage or remove subscribers.

How the LLM bot works

Topics as the basis for AI chat

Topics are the foundation of the AI-powered chat feature in YellowNotes. When you ask a question in the chat interface, the AI searches across all the YellowNotes belonging to the Topic to find relevant information and compose an answer. This means the quality and usefulness of the AI responses is directly shaped by the notes in the Topic — the more informative and well-organised the notes, the better the AI can answer questions about them.

Think of a Topic as a curated knowledge base: a set of notes on a subject that both human subscribers and the AI can query. The Topic owner shapes what the AI knows by choosing which notes to include.

Create

Topics can be created in two ways From the menubar of a yellownote. CLick "select share". At the bottom of the list of your topics, there is "add new topic". Clicking this gives you a prompt where you can type in the name of the new topic.
